It doesn’t matter if you have been driving 20 years or 2 months, would you know what do if you are in a fend bender big or small? For many they know what to do, but what if this accident is your first? You may have been told what needs to be done if a car wreck ever happens; but the other party is telling you there is no damage and you can just leave the scene.
No matter the size of your accident, a fender bender or your car has been totaled its very scary. Even the most careful drivers get into accidents, so here is 9 steps to make sure you have done everything you need to after your crash.
– Check your self and your passengers for injuries. That is of course if you are able too. If you are not sure the extent of your or your passengers injuries, call 911.
– Remain calm. This is often better said then done. You may remember things that you would otherwise forget if you are in calm state of mind. If the accident was not your fault, remain calm and polite while talking to the other party.
– Get moving. If your accident was minor, move your cars over to side of the road out of traffic. If your accident was more serious and the cars are unable to be moved but you are able to get out of your car, get you and your party over to the side of the road. If you are not sure about you or someones injuries that is involved in the car crash don’t move them. Moving someone with a serious injury could cause more damage so the best thing to do is wait for the paramedics to come.
– Take safety precautions. All cars are equipped with safety hazards. Turn them on! If you have cones in your trunk put them out, this allows others drivers to avoid the area. Carrying emergency flares in your trunk is a great idea to ensure that people can see you in the event of an accident.
– Call the police. Once you are assured that everyone is okay call the police. If you are in a minor accident you are probably better off calling the non emergency number is you know it. Otherwise call 911. Having the police there will help you properly fill out the right report you need and get the help you need.
– Take pictures. Most of everyone today is carrying a smart phone which has a camera. Taking pictures of the damage from the accident will help you prove if the other party says there is more damage after the fact. Sadly people today will sometimes lie about the damage to try and get more money. This is a great way to protect yourself. Also good to take pictures of the license plates as well.
– Exchange information. Collect as much information as you can about the other parties involved, including the driver’s name, address, phone number, insurance company, policy number, driver’s license number and license plate number. If you feel that you caused the accident, do not claim fault with the other party – it makes things more difficult for you later!
– Stay put! Never leave the scene of accident. Always stay put until the police arrive. In most states its actually illegal to leave until police have come and filled out a full report.
