You have finally bought a new house or maybe your found a dream apartment that you have been looking at for months. You are so excited to finally start fresh in a new home. But with moving comes that dreaded packing up your entire house. For some this is a great way to clean up all the clutter you have been saving. Others this could be there worse nightmare.
So how do you make this move easier? How do you make this big change stress free? Here are some great simple tips to make a moving into your new home a positive experience from start to finish!
Get organized
Don’t wait to last minute to start packing. Chances are you have a least 30 to 60 days before you leave your current home to move into your new one. Make a countdown check list of things you need to pack week by week. This will ensure that your moving day runs smoothly.
Figure out a move day game plan
Time to figure out how you are getting from A to B. Is this a quick move? Maybe down the street or to the other side of town? Call your friends with trucks and see if they want to lend a hand in the move. Or is this a big move with your entire family maybe to another state? Time to call some movers and get prices.
Lets Purge!
There is no better time to purge all those things you have been hanging on to then when its time to move! If your moving when the weather is nice outside it could be a great time to have a big yard sale! Sometimes someones trash is another persons treasure. If a yard sale isn’t your thing donating items is a great way to help others and can make for a great tax write off. Think about this purge as a fresh start to your new home.
Green your move
Moving boxes, newspaper, bubble wrap. These are all essentials when it comes to moving. But if your packing up something in storage to then put it back into storage why not use plastic bins. Instead of wasting all those materials head to your local home improvement store and pick up a couple 20 gallon storage bins. Also a great way to avoid bubble wrap is use those old linens that you have in your linen closet.
Now don’t get me wrong you will absolutely need you use boxes and newspaper to move but go onto your local towns Facebook page and see if anyone is giving away moving boxes that you can reuse. And always remember to recycle all these items when your done with your move.
Label everything
Labeling every box you pack will help in the unpacking process. It also helps the movers know which rooms to put your boxes. When you label, label all sides of the box and try to avoid the top. Whoever is carrying in your boxes might not make sure all labels are facing one way. So if it is labeled on all sides that makes it easy for them and you
They also make packing tape now that is already labeled which room it the box belongs. You have to tape your box why not have it show whats inside it. These rolls of tape are easily found on Amazon and will make unpacking a a bit easier!
Pack in what you pack
You have luggage. We all do and you are going to move it, so why not pack things in your suitcase. Same goes for dresser drawers. More likely than not you are going to take your drawers out of the dresser before you move it. So why not keep your clothes in them and move the drawers like that!
Be ready to move
You have either hired movers or asked friends and family to assist in your move. So when your doorbell rings on the day of your big move be ready to go. With a moving company, unless you hire packers, be ready and packed before the crew arrives. Scrambling for boxes will delay your move and could increase your cost. When your friends or family have come to help be respectful. They have taken time out of there day to help you, don’t have them waiting around for you finish up your packing.
Protect your valuables
If you have expensive jewelry or items that maybe very fragile and are worried that it could be broken in the move think about putting that in your car. The safest place it could be is with you. If you’re moving your computer, back it up before it goes on a moving truck. This will ensure everything will be there incase something happens to it during the move.
Dont mistake belongs for trash
A lot of times we move things in trash bags. Clothes, towels, blankets. Its easy and super convenient. But don’t mix these items up for bags of trash either before or after your move. Add labeled packing tape or write on the bag with marker to ensure it doesn’t get tossed.
Treat your movers
Whether you have hired movers or friends and family, be sure to have food and drinks readily available for everyone. They will appreciate it just as much as you appreciate them help you!
We hope these tips make your move goes a little more smoothly and stress free!
